This month's focus: Indie Sleaze

The tumblr era is back, but it's got a new name: the indie sleaze. This fashion subculture is a re-imagination of the tumblr aesthetic that was prominent in the early 2010's. Though it remains a subculture at the moment, we are anticipating that it will bleed into mainstream fashion in 2023. The indie sleaze will be seen through popular makeup styles, music genres and more.

At a high-level, the indie sleaze can be described as a grunge-influenced aesthetic who's followers give off a messy yet vibrant energy. The old fashion staples of the Tumblr aesthetic were fishnets, American Apparel clothing, and band merchandise. In 2023, the aesthetic will take on a new form by combining current micro-trends such as ballet-core and apocalyptic-core. Followers of the Indie Sleaze subculture will essentially try to emulate previous Tumblr fashion icons using modern day clothing.
